Fall Recruitment Info and Training

Patrick Dupont, this year’s FYR (Fall Youth Recruitment) coordinator & I are working on the plans for this year’s recruitment of new cub scouts (preparing for training sessions, reviewing unit’s goals, etc. ) We are excited to share with you some of the new tools and information for this year’s recruitment. There will not be any manual forms for this year’s materials so we need to enter all the information on line slightly earlier to ensure you’ll be getting all the flyers & everything you need on time for your events. Don’t miss attending one of the FYR training sessions to learn the information.

To prepare for recruitment, please ensure you have the following information.

  • Name, phone & email address of recruitment contact for your unit.
  • Schools that your unit supports
  • Date & time of your school’s open house/meet & greet events (most seem to be 9/1)
  • Date & time of your boy talks / lunch room visits
  • Location, Date & time of your unit’s recruitment
  • Location, Date & time of your unit’s parent orientation (can be done the same time as your normal pack meeting if you have enough adult leaders available)
  • Location, Date & time of your unit’s October Pack meeting
  • Verify if the pack’s Cubmaster, committee chair & recruitment contact have all signed into the YRT tool The link to the Youth Recruitment Planner is https://www.northernstarbsa.org/planner/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fplanner%2fdefault.aspx. Your user name is your email address. Please sign into the system and put in any information you have now. If you have problems signing in or need to get access or you have any questions, please contact Margaret @ white.margaret@gmail.com .

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either Patrick Dupont (patrick.dupont@comcast.net - 651-455-3333) or Margaret White (white.margaret@gmail.com - 651-295-2871).

We look forward to having a great FYR season! Thank you! Yours in Scouting,

Margaret White , Kaposia Membership Chair

Lion Cub Pack Sign Up

As Kaposia (Awesome!) Lion Cub Coordinator I am providing you information about this program as I receive it from the district. In order to sign up to participate in the Lion Cub Pilot Program for the 2010-2011 school year you will need to register on line with the Council. I have included the link for your Pack to sign up http://events.signup4.net/LionCubPilotProgram. There should be information included in this link where you would like to pick up your booklets and about any recruitment material. If for some reason you run into any trouble registering your Pack please let me know and I will see what I can do to assist you.

One of the main changes to the program this year is the cost: The fee for Lion Cubs has increased to $20 for the boy/adult pair. This increase is due to the increase to $15 for the annual registration. The $1 transfer fee in May/June 2011 will stay the same.

Our district transitioned 89% of all of our Lion Cubs last year into the Tiger Program. That is one of the highest percentages by districts of our size. The average for the entire council is 74%. This is a great accomplishment and I would like to thank everyone for their hard work last year. I hope we have continued success this year.

As always if there are any questions please let me know.

Thanks again,
Kim Baumeister

Youth Protection Resources & Links

News
National Office of the BSA Now Requires Adult Youth Protection Training As part of the Boy Scouts of America’s ongoing emphasis on the safety of our youth members, the requirements for Youth Protection Training for all leaders have been expanded.

While June 1 has just been announced as the effective date for requiring such training in order to be registered or to renew registration , full implementation details are still being worked out. Regardless, the generally slower Scouting pace of summer makes this an excellent time to complete this training and to encourage those in your area of responsibility to do so as well.

Training is available online by logging on to MyScouting (www.myscouting.org) or linking to this site via our website www.northernstarbsa.org and clicking on “Online Tools/Online Training” link. It is best to have your member ID number ( found on your BSA membership card or available from your unit leader, committee chair, or from our council service centers) when you get ready to access the training, so your member training record will be current for membership renewal purposes. Youth protection training may also be taken at the MyScouting link by those adults who are not yet registered leaders with the BSA. Once registered with BSA, a leader may log back into his/her MyScouting account, add a member number, and thus receive credit for Youth Protection training via automatic update to his/her ScoutNET record. A key point, with regard to those who are not registered with the BSA yet, is that they need to print off a copy of their trained status to submit with their application for registration. This is key, because otherwise it will be yet another bone of contention when they show up with their app, and we can’t register them, and they can’t get another certificate without taking the training again.

Stay tuned for further updates, and don’t forget to schedule your age-appropriate version of the Youth training for all of the youth in your unit (if you are a unit level volunteer), found on the DVDs distributed to every unit this spring. This area will be designated for Youth Protection Contact information.

Unit Leaders that are not Youth Protection Trained will not be allowed to recharter 2011.

Unit Direct Contact Leaders

Last year 90% of the units that did not make quality did do because they failed to have their Direct Contact Leaders attend training. Unit Leaders must be: 1) Current Youth Protection Training (expires every 2 years) 2) This is Scouting 3) Attended training for their current position.

If you changed positions since your last attendence, you are not considered trained. How do I get trained? Goto www.myscouting.org register or log-on. Click the training tab. Take training for your level of Scouting. How do I get position specific trained? Attend training by January 31, 2011. You can register by emailing Jim Corniea, our District Training Chair at jimcorniea@comcast.net . Information on this training is on the District web page under training. This is a Centennial Award quality requirement and Northernstar BSA policy. All youth leaders and interested parents MUST complete Youth Protection Training. To make quality this must be completed by December 31st, 2010.

ROUNDTABLE

District Roundtable has, without a doubt, been the factor most responsible for our pack still being in existence. Without the strong leadership in our awesome KAPOSIA District and the dedication of our DE, DC and other fine RT and Training Staff, we would have lacked the knowledge, the direction and the motivation to perservere at the Cub Scout Pack level. I feel the Cub Scouts and Scout families in our unit have directly benefitted from RT.Carl & Kim Baumeister Pack 107
